Getting caught texting or watching Youtube using your cell phone while driving will raise your insurance rate by an average of 23% ($356) — and in some states much more than 63%. The cost for distracted driving has increased notably in recent years as insurers learn more about the costs and more states create laws prohibiting it.
Anything that takes your attention away from driving can be a distraction. Sending a text message, talking on a cell phone, using a navigation system, and eating while driving are a few examples of distracted driving. Any of these distractions can endanger you, your passengers, and others on the road.
There are three main types of distraction:
- Visual: taking your eyes off the road
- Manual: taking your hands off the wheel
- Cognitive: taking your mind off driving
