Photo enforcement cameras return to Chandler intersections Monday

Cameras

Drivers in Chandler will soon start seeing the flash of photo enforcement cameras in select intersections around the city.

On Monday, May 16, photo enforcement cameras at seven Chandler intersections will activate to begin a week-long system test.

Motorists passing through these intersections may see the cameras flash.

But a flash doesn’t mean a ticket right now, at least.  During this test period, the cameras will be in a calibration and set-up process, and there will be no warnings or citations issued during this time.

The intersections with the cameras are listed below:

-Eastbound Ray Road at Alma School Road

-Westbound Warner Road at Alma School Road

-Southbound Alma School Road at Warner Road

-Westbound Chandler Boulevard at Kyrene Road

-Southbound McClintock Drive at Ray Road

-Eastbound Ray Road at McClintock Drive

-Westbound Chandler Boulevard at Dobson Road

On the following Monday, May 23, 2016, violators captured on the photo enforcement cameras will receive a warning in the mail for their respective violations.

Warnings will continue at these seven intersections through June 19, 2016.

On June 20, 2016, the photo enforcement cameras at these seven intersections will be in full operation, and citations will be generated for speeding and red light violations.

The Chandler Police Department would like to remind motorists to stay alert, don’t drive while distracted, and follow all traffic laws.  Practicing safe driving helps keep our community safe.

A statement on the City of Chandler’s website reads:

“While the Police Department does a great job to make Chandler streets safe, the Chandler’s Red Light Photo Enforcement Program provides round-the-clock monitoring of intersections where accidents occur most frequently. Offenders have the option of paying a fine or paying a fee to attend traffic school. Citations are printed with photographic records of the offense so drivers can see the record personally.

To further boost the safety of driving on Chandler’s streets, the Police Department implemented the Speed on Green Enforcement Program. Like the red light program, speed on green is in place to aid the Police Department in monitoring intersections where higher numbers of accidents occur. Cameras in these intersections do not just operate when a signal is ignored, but also when the posted speed limit is exceeded.”

Back in March, an opinion on photo enforcement by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich had Valley cities scrambling to determine if they were in compliance.

State Representative Sonny Borrelli was the one who asked the Attorney General to look into the matter. His question, whether third party contractors who operate photo enforcement systems are required to be licensed as private investigators per state statute.

“The Attorney General did rule that all third party vendors, in this case, ATS and Redflex, that they need to be licensed,” said Borrelli.
