(NHTSA)<\/li><li>Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times as likely to be involved in a serious crash. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)<\/li><li>In 2013, ten percent of fatal crashes, 18 percent of injury crashes, and 16 percent of all motor vehicle traffic crashes 2013 were reported as distraction-affected crashes. (NHTSA)<\/li><li>In 2013, ten percent of all drivers 15-19 years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crashes. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who are distracted.<\/li><li>(NHTSA)<\/li><\/ul><p>While those numbers may sound like just stats, they\u2019re real lives.\u00a0 They could be parents, children, neighbors, and friends from right here in Arizona\u00a0 There are too many sad stories of deaths and tragic injuries that could have been prevented had drivers been paying attention to the road instead of someone or something else.<\/p><p>So, why do so many people practice such bad behavior?\u00a0 With more tech now than ever, distractions have risen to unprecedented levels.\u00a0 We live in a place where people expect instant, real-time information 24\/7, and those expectations don\u2019t stop just because someone is driving.\u00a0 People still do not realize \u2013 or choose to ignore \u2013 the danger they create when they take their eyes off the road, their hands off the wheel, and their focus off driving.<\/p><p>People often say, \u201cI can do two things at once.\u00a0 I\u2019ve memorized where the numbers are on my phone, so I don\u2019t have to look.\u201d Or, \u201cSending or reading one text is pretty quick \u2013 that should be okay.\u201d\u00a0 They couldn\u2019t be more deadly wrong.<\/p><p>For those who think they can do two things at once, think about this: According to a 2014 special article in the New England Journal of Medicine, the risk of a crash or near-crash among novice drivers increased with the performance of many secondary tasks, including texting and dialing cell phones. Driving is an activity that requires your full attention and focuses on keeping yourself and others safe.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Yes, this is a national problem, but it also affects us right here in Arizona.\u00a0 There is no one immune from the dangers of distracted driving.
